Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
