Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
