The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
